Angel Fire sits above 8,000 feet, and the mountain climate that makes it beautiful is also demanding on HVAC equipment. Thinner air, big temperature swings, long heating seasons, and dry conditions all add up to more wear than a system would see at lower elevation.
The short answer: service your heating in the fall and your cooling in the spring — twice a year. If you have a heat pump that runs year-round, two visits still covers you well.
Why altitude matters. Furnaces have to work harder to produce the same heat in thinner air, and proper combustion tuning becomes more important for both efficiency and safety. Long, cold winters mean your heating runs for months at a time, so small issues have a lot of hours to turn into failures.
What regular service prevents. Most no-heat and no-cool emergencies we see could have been caught during a routine tune-up — a weak capacitor, a dirty coil, a low refrigerant charge, a clogged drain. Catching those early is far cheaper than an emergency call on the coldest night of the year.
What you can do yourself. Change or check your filter regularly, keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and snow, and pay attention to changes in airflow, noises, or your energy bills. When something seems off, call early.
