Getting Your Northern New Mexico Home Ready for Winter

Winter arrives early and stays late in the mountains. A little preparation now saves you from a cold house — and an emergency call — when the temperature drops. Here’s a simple checklist.

1. Test your heat before you need it. Run your furnace or heat pump for a full cycle now, while a problem is an inconvenience instead of an emergency. Listen for odd noises and notice any strange smells.

2. Change your filter. A clogged filter makes your system work harder and heat less evenly. Start the season with a fresh one and check it monthly through winter.

3. Clear the outdoor unit. If you have a heat pump, keep it free of leaves, ice, and snow so it can breathe and defrost properly.

4. Check your thermostat. Make sure it’s holding temperature and, if it’s programmable, that its schedule still makes sense for your winter routine.

5. Schedule a heating tune-up. A professional tune-up catches the small failures that cause most mid-winter breakdowns, and confirms your system is running safely and efficiently.

Doing these before the first hard freeze is the difference between a comfortable winter and a stressful one.

Want a pro to make sure you’re ready? Call (575) 223-1122 to book a heating tune-up.
